1823/2 Bust Quarter PCGS OGH AU55
We are pleased to offer a coin we strongly feel represents the best aspects of American numismatics. The 1823/2 Bust Quarter is widely regarded as an absolute rarity with only 31 examples known, most of which are heavily worn. Throughout history numerous highly regarded collections have lacked an example, while others have had to settle for a well circulated specimen. A demonstration of this is the National Collection at the Smithsonian which contains a heavily cleaned VG example. The coin being offered here today is a true survivor having escaped the wear and tear of a coin's true function, heavy circulation. This AU55 PCGS old green label example is considered the fourth finest known and has a full pedigree dating back to perhaps Virgil Brand.
The coin itself exhibits Proof-like surfaces blanketed with a layer of old time toning. The strike is full on the obverse with no weakness in the stars nor on Lady Liberty. The reverse exhibits this hammered strike as well, evident in the full tail and wing feathers. Some contact marks in the right obverse fields and below the right eagle wing on the reverse are what holds this example back from a higher grade but does not do much to affect the overall WOW factor in hand. This is a special coin in virtually every-way and one we feel is destined for one of the next great collections.
